With the Glasgow Jazz Festival just around the corner i'm getting ready for a busy week. My Quintet will be playing at the Homegrown showcase on the 24th of June. Hi Folks,

Well as you can see the site has had a nice little change not only visually but with some new sounds to check out. The two new tracks in the listen section are from a recording session earlier this year with the incredible Ari Hoenig on Drums, Gilad Hekselman on Guitar, Tom Gibbs on Piano and Martin Kershaw on Alto Sax. These are rough mixes but i thought I'd stick a couple excerpts up anyway to see what you all think. Hope you like!

I've just returned from New York where I had the great pleasure to play on the Album of the fantastic guitarist Mark McKnight. It was a really amazing band with Will Vinson on Alto, Mark Ferber on Drums and Sam Yahel on Piano. Keep an eye out for the C.D. next year I think it'll turn out great.

The site is getting updated regularly so keep checking back. I'm working on a lot of new projects for 2009, more info on that to come. Please sign up to the mailing list if you'd like to be kept up to date on future events and hopefully you can make it out to a show sometime.

Hope you are all well. Thanks for dropping by the site. Few bits a bobs planned for this year. The new record will come out at some point...promise. I'll be on BBC Radio Scotland next Wed (Repeated Sunday) with a new group performing our take on the songs of Robert Burns. It feature Victoria Fifield on Violin, Graeme Stephen on Guitar and Tom Gibbs on Piano, check it out.
May will bring some touring with the saxophone genius that is Will Vinson and there will be another Ari Hoenig Trio tour later in the year. There will also be some gigs with Mark McKnight promoting his new record we did last year. I'll keep you posted on the details.

So Tom Gibbs and myself have finally got round to mixing our new record and hopefully it shall be coming out in January. It's been quite a wait (we recorded it last year) but we're on the home straight at last. We'll be back in the studio tomorrow to finalise the mixes.

Its provisionally entitled "Forgotten Things" and features Ari Hoenig, Gilad Hekselman and Martin Kershaw. We'll let you know as soon as a release date has been set.

Soaring jazz from young Scots.

The confidence and accomplishment of Scotland’s young jazz musicians these days is well represented by this first release on a new label. Don’t be misled by the Wee Jazz name; bassist Euan Burton and pianist Tom Gibbs may lead a group that’s small in number but it includes two of New York’s current hottest players, guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Ari Hoenig, as well as Scots-based saxophonist Martin Kershaw, and their music is correspondingly international in reach and quality. Pat Metheny and EST spring to mind, as does Art Pepper on Burton’s groovy Party Time, but these are reference points rather than overt influences on pieces that can be quirky, reflective, playful and occasionally slightly dark, and all the players involved have strong personalities of their own, not least the ultra-aware Hoenig. Gibbs emerges as a highly imaginative composer as well as a really thoughtful improviser, but the overall impression is of five musicians working for the common good in creating genial melodic music of a consistently high standard.
